Don't Ask, Don't Tell

I was going to try and tackle the whole "gays in the military" issue, and then I stumbled across Liz Goodwin's Yahoo! blog "The Upshot." I then realized how far my little Mom and Pop blog has to go.

Anyway, do yourself a favor and check it out here.

  1. Interesting. That McCain is something else. I also thought the comment made by the vet about AIDS was incredibly stupid. Ignorance, ignorance, ignorance. Anyone in the military is at risk of contracting HIV...not just gays, you idiot. I could probably write a book on this topic. But I will start with a few sentences. If a person is willing to die to protect your freedom, you should thank him/her instead of condemn him/her for his skin tone, religion, or sexual orientation.

  2. Interesting. That McCain is something else. Maybe if you keep yelling, someone with actually believe you, John. And, as for the vet who commented on AIDS, you are an ignoramus! Anyone in the world is susceptible to HIV, not just gay men. Get the facts, genius. Look, if someone is willing to die for your freedom, try thanking him/her instead of condemning his/her race, religion, or sexual orientation.

  4. Well let's see. Modern times, modern issues. As we have seen with most of what we have discussed, ignorance breeds fear. If you are willing to sacrifice your life for this country, you are a few steps ahead of most people who would never consider it. I am not sure why sexuality is even a topic of discussion when the issue here is one's ability to fire a weapon or risk his life in the face of one.

  5. Lizzardo - Politics is a mo-fo. Poor Sen. McCain understands that his party (or at least the most vocal membership) is drifting to the extreme right. He knows that to stay relevant/electable he must pander to the neo-conservative, bible-thumping minority that the Republican party has become. Give a torture victim a break.

Irving- I'm sure, back in the day, you didn't watch newsreel of the boys stormin' the beach at Normandy or Patton breaking through at Bastogne and say to yourself "Gee, I'm sure glad those boys like dames!"

  6. Great point, Annoying Joe. I remember when G.W. Bush used the gay issue to scare Christians into voting for him. Sad scenario. Not that the Dems have done much better lately. Both sides are sorely lacking in their own ways. We need some more independents out there!
Not saying that I agree with everything he does, but Governor Crist down in Florida switched from Rep. to Independent when the issues he felt deeply about no longer fit into his party's mold. Thought that was a strong move on his part.

  7. You probably have a point there. Although, we never really thought about gays before the late 60s, early 70s. Nobody, and I mean nobody, discussed that topic. In my opinion, it is just another way for politicians to avoid much larger issues like a failing economy, tension with the Middle East and North Korea...need I go on?

  8. Hmmm....well, as a dude, I understand how the whole gay thing can be uncomfortable at first. BUT-in an emergency or when national security is on the line, I stand behind anyone brave enough to stick his neck out for my family's safety. Don't really care who the person sleeps with.

  9. I don't ask..because I really don't want to know. What these people do behind closed doors is a sin. The military should make them come to Jesus before letting them enlist. You don't like that policy, move to Canada.

  10. Dick...looks like your parents picked the right name! Why don't you move out of the Stone Ages. If you check the piece on Creationism, you may find a picture of yourself riding a dinosaur.

  11. Wow...never heard that one before. Lizzardo...hmmm....maybe they have a place there for you, too.

  12. Dick, what about Muslims or Jews or Atheists? do they have to come to Jesus before enlisting?

  13. Well, Dick, if you can't laugh at yourself.... Look, here is the bottom line. I respect your right to worship and as an American, I hope you respect mine as well. As much as I am tempted to throw stones, it would not be productive. I choose instead to understand the basis for your thoughts...so have at it. Tell me why you feel that God judges gays? What is your exact basis for this?

  14. Read the Bible. Several verses condemn the act of men laying with men. It is just unnatural. And before the sexual revolution in the 60s, most people agreed with me! The hippies ruined our country!

  15. Wow...interesting perspective, Dick. So, laying with another man is a sin. Does that apply to sharing bunkbeds at summer camp? And, by the way...do you eat shellfish?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Of course I eat shellfish. What does that have to do with the price of tea in China? Does eating shellfish make me queer?

    ReplyDelete
  17. No, it doesn't make you queer. It makes you a hypocrite. Why don't you have a look at Leviticus 11:9-12-
Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat. 10 But anything in the seas or the rivers that has not fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and of the living creatures that are in the waters, is detestable to you. 11 You shall regard them as detestable; you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses. 12 Everything in the waters that has not fins and scales is detestable to you.
So, since a sin is a sin....you and I are equals. I'm "queer" as you call it and you eat shellfish. How do you explain that?

  18. Look, don't use the Bible against good people. You people will do anything to make yourselves feel better about being sinners.

  20. Wow...what a come back! I feel like such a sinner now. Amazing how you love to point fingers, but are pretty lacking in actual Bible knowledge. Look, Dickie, when you actually open the book, let me know what it also says about casting stones. Peace~

  21. Dick - unfortunately, using the Bible against good people is exactly what you are doing.
